The Rules
Keep in mind this is YOUR adventure.
No one is going to hold your hand, keep a close watch on you, etc.
If you get to the point that you feel cheating is necessary, do us all a huge favor. Stop. Go home. Keep your honor. You should regard this as fair warning.
Pacers are not allowed, except for the 22 mile beach run (crewed runners only) at the beginning of the course. This is for safety reasons and anyone found moving along course with anyone not registered in the challenge will immediately be disqualified. Exception: event staff may join runners for short periods of time, this will not be for the purposes of pacing.
Challengers are responsible for checking in at all designated checkpoints. Crews may not do this for you. Unless otherwise dictated by event staff checkins can e done by text or phone call.
During the hours of darkness each day of the event ("nighttime running hours"), while outside on the race course, all racers and all crew members must wear reflective material. Headlamps are also HIGHLY recommended. These are not areas where vehicles are accustomed to seeing runners or pedestrians and they will not expect you to be there. Stay safe.
Runners must ALWAYS obey all traffic signals/laws (including stop lights). Never assume just because you have right of way vehicles will give it to you. If I made that assumption I would have never completed a cross state challenge. Expect the unexpected and don't zone out. The roads remain open to normal traffic throughout the entire challenge. Distracted drivers are a real issue. Psychopaths are a real issue. Assholes are a real issue. You will encounter them all. Feel free to yell at them or give them the finger at your own discretion, just remember you don't know who it is! You will also meet amazing people along the way- focus on them, forget the others. Let me know if you know how to do that.
Do not litter.
Each challenger must use state ferries. Private passage is not allowed. Please consider that homeland security requires ID to board ferries. If you choose not to bring any ID and are not allowed to board a ferry you're going to have a hard time completing the challenge.
Whether you are running crewed or screwed you must complete the entire course under your own power. You may leave the course anytime you like but you must return to the course where you left it.
In the event that it is not "your day," and you decide to drop from the race, we suggest you first take a little bit of time to make that decision. Often, just getting off your feet for 15-30 minutes, consuming some calories, and hearing some words of encouragement can turn things around pretty dramatically for a runner. If, however, you do decide to drop, please let the race director know. Solo runners will be picked up and taken back to their vehicles as needed. Keep in mind, runners get spread out quickly. Getting to you may take time, getting you back to your vehicle may also take time. The race director is not responsible for your additional expenses if you may need a room, food, or medical assistance. You should be KEENLY aware that once you take the ferry to Ocracoke Island you are on your own for those 13 miles. You will need to make to Cedar Island for a pick up or assistance.
Mandatory tracking. There are a lot of different ways this can be done. At the moment there are three acceptable ways. The idea is always to have a somewhat accurate idea of your location in case of anything that could go wrong. This can dramatically reduce the time it might take to get you help should you need it.
1. Spot tracker.
2. Find friends for iPhone.
3. Life 360 for Samsung.
Exceptions can be made for other methods but must be pre-approved by the race director. And pre-approved doesn't mean the day before the challenge. Prepare accordingly. This is the responsibility of the challenger.
Attending the debuggers dinner is highly encouraged. This is a fun, casual event. The pre-race briefing will be given here and will include any special course, safety and rules info. If you can't make the dinner you're really missing a big part of the adventure. Family and friends are welcome to join.
The race director reserves the right to add/change rules as needed for the safety of the challengers.
If you somehow manage to get off course, you are responsible for getting back on course by foot.
By signing up for this challenge you automatically cause me to start spending money. Simply put, once you enter consider the money gone. See refund policy on registration page.
If you need an ambulance ride, it's time to go home. Live to adventure another day.

Screwed Runners
You may stay anywhere you want, you can eat anywhere you want - you must get to and from there on your own. This is a foot challenge. You are not allowed in a vehicle at any time even if it's just to change clothes. Doing so will cause your status to be changed to crewed. If for whatever reason the police ask you to get in their car - do as they say.
You are required to embark/disembark all ferries by foot. You are not allowed in vehicles here either. All the ferries have a lounge area and some have vending. Please feel free to enjoy.
You are not allowed to receive aid from the crew of any other registered runner. You may receive aid from road angels or people not associated with the challenge. The same rules apply to you here as it does for the crewed runners, only as safely permissible and never from a vehicle in the road, moving, parked, or stopped.

Crewed Runners
You may receive aid from your crew anytime you want. You can ride to hotels to sleep, etc. Just remember to mark the point you left the course and restart at the same point.
You are not allowed to receive anything from a vehicle moving, parked, or stopped on the road.
Your crew vehicle(s) are not allowed to follow in front or behind you, or impede regular traffic in any way! This is grounds for disqualification. Crews can only assist the runner from a safe and legally parked position. Let the runner come to you. If runner is in such bad shape that you think you need to go to them, it might be way past time for a break or to stop. Just common sense.
You must embark/disembark all ferries on foot. You can stay in crew vehicles once you are on the ferry but the distance on and off the ferry must be on foot.
The race director is not responsible for your crew. They are not part of the challenge.
